The Counseling Center of the North Shore’s premier Internship Program provides graduate students with in-depth clinical training through direct client contact and intensive supervision and consultation. Now, we are also offering a Fellowship Program for recently graduated clinicians who are seeking to launch their professional career in a program that provides continued hands-on training, extensive supervision, and theoretical education within a supportive and engaging clinical community.
Clinical Internship Program
This advanced level clinical internship is for students pursuing graduate degrees in social work, psychology, or counseling. All interns must have already completed their first level internship elsewhere and remain in good academic standing. The ideal candidate will have had some experience working with clients in therapy during their first level internship, but this is not a requirement.
Internship Activities
1. Direct Service
|
2. Community Outreach
- Interns will have the opportunity to develop, lead, or co-lead discussions/workshops with CCNS’ community partners and local organizations, such as the Winnetka-Northfield Library, The Women’s Exchange, and Sacred Heart School. Workshops and discussion groups focus on psychoeducation, topics related to mental health, parenting, healthy relationships, and self-care.
- Throughout the program, CCNS staff therapists will make presentations to the interns on their specializations and interests.
- Interns will be encouraged to attend training and community educational events offered by other local agencies.
Educational Approach
1. Approach to clinical supervision and professional development
Interns will receive one hour of individual clinical supervision per week and will participate, alongside seasoned therapists and any other interns, in group clinical consultation facilitated by the agency’s clinical director. Group consultation includes review and discussion of readings, case presentations by staff, and in-services by staff on areas of their expertise. The clinical director will be closely supervising the fieldwork supervisors to ensure students receive a consistent and excellent clinical experience and education during their tenure. Student interns are expected to generate process recordings as a fundamental tool of the supervision process.
2. Theoretical and Evidence-based approaches used by the agency
Our agency therapists primarily practice Psychodynamic Psychotherapy using a relational and trauma-informed approach. While this is the general clinical approach utilized by staff, our therapists are trained and, when clinically indicated, apply Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills training, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Internal Family Systems Therapy. Two of our therapists also practice EMDR.
3. Evaluation and Outcome measures
Students will engage in regular case reviews and participate in the client satisfaction survey process. Students will have the opportunity to develop and implement community needs assessments and program evaluations as appropriate to the agency mission and meeting the student’s skills and interests.
