The Counseling Center of the North Shore (CCNS) is a nonprofit mental health center with a mission of helping people through life’s challenges and transitions by providing access to counseling, therapy, and community education.
History
The founding of CCNS dates back to 1893, when three local merchants formed the Winnetka Relief League to aid the needy in the community. At that time, the agency was focused on meeting physical needs for food, shelter, clothing, and heating fuel. During the Great Depression, the agency hired a social worker and the focus began to shift to addressing the emotional needs of individuals and families by providing mental health counseling.
In the mid-1970s, the organization, then known as Family Service Winnetka-Northfield, moved to our current offices on Green Bay Road. By then, the clinical staff consisted entirely of licensed therapists with graduate degrees who provided therapy and educational programs to community organizations and mental health professionals.
In 2016, the organization adopted the name Counseling Center of the North Shore to better communicate the services we provide and the primary geography of our client base.
CCNS Today
Our licensed clinicians work with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families to address a range of issues, including: Anxiety/Stress, Depression, Self-Esteem, Marital Conflicts/Divorce, Parent-Child Concerns, Life Transitions, Aging and Caregiving, Sexuality/LGBT issues, and Substance Use. Our clients come from all over the North Shore and Chicago. We offer in-person and telehealth therapy in both English and Spanish.
In addition to therapy, CCNS is one the few mental health centers in the area that offers psychological testing and assessments on a sliding fee basis.
Throughout the year our clinical staff makes presentations and holds workshops on various mental health subjects to community groups and professionals.
CCNS is an in-network provider for Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, UnitedHealthcare, Cigna PPO, Aetna, and Humana. We also accept Medicare clients. For self-pay clients, fees are based on a sliding scale determined by household income and the number of dependent family members.
